Clinical Simulation-based Assessment

The CRMEHC provides psychometric and other technical support to the faculty and staff of Jefferson’s Clinical Skills Center. The faculty of both Centers have been collaborating with investigators at the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates and the National Board of Medical Examiners on research studies related to the validation of clinical simulations using standardized patients.

For example, little is known about the congruence between students’ written notes and patients’ checklists as summaries of encounters. In one study already completed, students examined standardized patients and summarized their findings in post-encounter notes. The patients completed checklists. A physician read the students’ notes and completed parallel checklists to document the history and physical items performed. Rates of omission and inconsistency were calculated in order to describe the level of agreement. The findings, which are described in a manuscript under review, will inform the process of developing and scoring clinical skills assessments.

Another study is examining the validity of Jefferson’s comprehensive, third-year Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in relation to other measures of students’ performance at Jefferson as well as their performance on subscales of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 2 Clinical Skills test.
