Neurovascular Surgery &
Endovascular Neurosurgery
This Division represents a comprehensive approach to cerebrovascular disease that includes microsurgery for stroke prevention, endovascular embolization techniques for aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, and stereotactic radiosurgery for brain AVMs. The division handles a larger volume of vascular neurosurgery than all other programs in the Philadelphia region combined.
Minimally Invasive Cranial Base Surgery & Endoscopic Neurosurgery
Using innovative techniques in endoscopic skull base surgery, the Division is emerging as a national leader in minimally invasive approaches to large and complex tumors of the skull base.
Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
The Epilepsy Center combines expertise from neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and radiology to offer a multi-disciplinary program with one of the largest referral bases and clinical volumes in the country. Current research interests include cortical stimulation as a treatment for seizures, genetic influences on susceptibility for seizures, the effect of seizures on heart function, and the roles of neurotransmitters and receptors in epilepsy.
Jefferson Brain Tumor Center
This Division was established in 1995 to seek new means of imaging and treating brain tumors, and has developed into one of the largest brain tumor programs in North America. Using techniques in stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy, the Division has established a new standard of care for a variety of intracranial tumors.
Spinal & Peripheral Nerve Disorders
Comprehensive spinal disorders, including neoplasms and degeneration, are treated with a multi-disciplinary approach. Additionally, numerous novel, minimally invasive approaches and spinal radiosurgery modalities are being developed as alternative approaches to treating patients. This Division treats the largest number of traumatic acute SCI patients in North America.
Functional Neurosurgery
Jefferson's department is a pioneer in the application of novel electrical neurological stimulator and drug delivery systems to patients. This Division treats more cases of chronic pain and movement disorders than all other Philadelphia programs combined.
