Dr. Buchheit previously served as vice chair and residency training program director of the department from 1995 to 1999. Prior to his appointment to Jefferson in 1995, he was chair and training program director of neurosurgery at Temple University School of Medicine, where he had been a member of the faculty since 1996. Dr. Buchheit specialized in treating brain tumors, and particularly, acoustic neuromas.
He has served as president of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of University Neurosurgeons, vice chairman of the Residency Review Committee for Neurosurgery as well as governor of the American College of Surgeons. He is a past member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. In 1994, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He has lectured internationally and has published widely.
