Division of Hematology
The Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research was founded in 1941 by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Cardeza as a memorial to Mr. Cardeza’s mother, Charlotte Drake Cardeza. Since that time the Foundation has supported Hematologic research and the Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine at the Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University. Such support has fulfilled the gracious intentions of the Cardezas and enabled creation of one of the premier academic Hematology programs in the world.
The Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research has a proud, beginning with its first Director, Dr. Harold Jones, who was a respected Hematologist and personal physician to Mrs. Cardeza. The second Director, Dr. Alan Erslev, was an internationally acclaimed Hematologist who discovered erythropoietin and trai ned numerous academic Hematologists. The third Director, Dr. Sandy Shapiro, was an outstanding clinician-scientist who made seminal contributions in coagulation and founded the Cardeza Hemophilia Center. Dr. Steven McKenzie, the fourth director; continues to perform cutting-edge research on heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, to direct the Cardeza Hemophilia Center and is Vice President of Research at Thomas Jefferson University.
Currently, the Cardeza Foundation supports faculty salaries, research programs, education programs and administration located on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors of the Curtis Building of the Jefferson Medical College.
