Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at the Thomas Jefferson University & Hospital is well established and has a tradition of excellence in tertiary clinical care, medical education, and research and has been repeatedly listed as a top performer in the US News & World Report. Under new leadership, the division is entering an exciting era of growth and innovation:

  • Integrated ambulatory facilities with physician offices, patient exam rooms, conference rooms, imaging facilities, and sleep lab conveniently collocated;
  • Planned renovation of outpatient facilities with the addition of a new pulmonary function laboratory and  addition
    of an ambulatory bronchoscopy procedure suite;
  • Recently added 10 bed state-of-the-art sleep lab;
  • Expansion of critical care at the center city hospital, with addition of 25 new medical critical care beds
    by March 2011;
  • Planned recruitment of additional faculty with increase in interventional bronchoscopy services;
  • Expansion of the division of translational research in the department of medicine to include
    lung biology research.

MICUThe Pulmonary & Critical Care Division has nine full-time faculty, 12 fellows in a three year training program, and  oversees approximately 1,000 ICU admissions, 1,000 in-patient consultations, and more than 600 endoscopic procedures each year. Moreover, there are approximately 8,000 outpatient pulmonary visits annually.  The divisional faculty have expertise in asthma and obstructive lung disease, sarcoidosis and interstitial lung disease, interventional bronchoscopy and lung cancer, medical critical care, alveolar proteinosis and other rare lung diseases, sleep disorders, and pulmonary vascular disease.  The medical center also extends to include Methodist hospital in south Philadelphia, Lankenau hospital in the mainline area to the west, and the new outpatient expansion to the  Navy yard to the south.
