Research and Clinical Interests
Within the Division of Infectious Diseases we are collaborating on clinical trials that examine the efficacy and safety of vaccines for viral syndromes seen with increased frequency in HIV-infected individuals: human papilloma virus, and varicella/zoster. Although these vaccines are currently FDA-approved, they have not been studied in this patient population. Not only are the incidence and prevalence higher but the persistence and spectrum of clinical disease caused by these viruses more severe in the setting of HIV immunosuppression. In addition, we will be participating in early phase proof of concept studies for herpes virus type 1 and 2. Members of the Division have participated in phase II HIV vaccine candidate studies in HIV-negative and HIV-positive individuals; we plan to pursue this area of interest when novel, promising candidate vaccines are identified. Membership in the Jefferson Vaccine Center will substantially facilitate these collaborations.
