Jefferson Medical College
Department of Radiation Oncology
The mission of Jefferson's Department of Radiation Oncology is to improve cancer patient outcomes through outstanding patient-centered care, research, and education.
Jefferson's radiation oncology cancer care takes place through our department in Center City Philadelphia at the Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment and the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience. We are also located at the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiosurgery at Aria Health, Radiation Oncology Pavilion at Methodist Hospital, the Jefferson Radiation Oncology Center at Riddle Memorial Hospital, and at Nazareth Hospital. We also have a CyberKnife facility at the Rothman Speciality Hospital in Bensalem. The department evaluates over 2,000 newly-diagnosed cancer patients each year and offers unique, cutting-edge clinical research trial opportunities to all patients. The physicians, physicists, and scientists are nationally and internationally renown for their expertise in cancer care and research and are considered key-opinion leaders in their respective subspecialities.
Our research efforts encompass all three major arms of research - basic, translational, and clinical. Our basic research in the Division of Medical Physics is led by Yan Yu, Ph.D., M.B.A., appointed as the Director of this Division in 2008 and Vice Chair in 2011. Bo Lu, M.D., P.H.D. was appointed the Director of the Division of Molecular Radiation Biology in 2011, and oversees our translational and molecular radiobiology research. Clinical Radiation Oncology research efforts are directed by Maria Werner-Wasik, M.D.
The Radiation Oncology Residency Program trains physicians in a multi-disciplinary, research-based, patient-oriented approach to the practice of radiation oncology. Jefferson's philosophy emphasizes basic science and translational research as a platform for the cutting edge practice of oncology.
