Hematologic malignancies are cancers of the blood cells and their pre-cursors.  The most common types are leukemias, Hodgkins’s lymphoma, and Non-Hodgkins lymphomas.  These cancers may arise from the bone marrow, lymph nodes, or extra-nodal locations such as the stomach, brain, testes and orbit.  They may be found only in one area such as a lymph node or spread throughout the body.  These cancers cause fatigue, anemia, weight loss, fevers, chills, night sweats, bleeding, abdominal pain, palpable masses, or other symptoms.

The treatment of leukemias and lymphomas depend on the type and location.  Chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for these cancers, but radiation plays an important role in certain types of lymphomas.  Additionally, we offer total body irradiation as part of the condition regimen prior to bone marrow transplantation as a part of the therapy for certain leukemias and lymphomas.  At Jefferson we pride ourselves on strong interdisciplinary cooperation between radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and hematology oncologists.  Physicians have at their disposal the latest technologies to deliver conformal and stereotactic radiotherapy.  Our physicians are nationally renowned leaders of the field who have the experience to deliver optimal care to our patients.

Furthermore Jefferson has an active clinical trials program. When appropriate, patients are given the opportunity to participate in national and institutional research studies that integrate new drugs and treatment approaches to continue to improve our success in treating brain tumors.  Some trials are available only at Jefferson – please inquire to what trials are currently available!
