Acute Care Surgery Division
Overview
In the Acute Care Surgery Division, our trauma population is primarily blunt trauma (80%) versus penetrating trauma (20%), with an equal number of direct admissions (48%) versus transfers (52%). Our transfer patients are usually transferred into Jefferson by our own interfacility transport program JEFFSTAT, and our direct admissions primarily arrive via Philadelphia EMS Fire Department. Our interface with both JEFFSTAT and EMS is integral to maintaining the pre-hospital and interhospital quality care.
Jefferson experiences greater than 90% occupancy in both designated trauma intensive care units (ICU) and greater than 85% daily occupancy as a total hospital. To address this capacity issue and to decrease Emergency Department length of stay, Jefferson is currently completing the planning phase of the expansion of the Emergency Department and the addition of 34 new ICU beds. This expansion is projected to be completed by 2009.
