The Institute's Current Education Programs

The education facility consists of two classrooms, a media center, a conference room, a video learning center, a library and offices for education personnel. In addition to these dedicated teaching facilities, students utilize the division of diagnostic ultrasound's clinical facilities in the evening for practical, hands-on training in the use of ultrasound equipment.

The Institute's education staff includes a manager, education coordinator, technical coordinator, media specialist and secretary. Along with the physicians and technical staff, these individuals produce more than 50 continuing medical education courses at Jefferson each year.

Learning Resources

A key achievement of the Institute's programs has been an increase in learning opportunities for students beyond the parameters of scheduled lecture hours. For example, videotaping of lectures and demonstrations for future reference allows students to learn at a pace best suited for them and their particular learning style. Copies of the videotapes are made and placed in a circulating video library. Students may view or review the lectures at any time. The video library currently houses more than 3,000 hours of lectures and demonstrations on all aspects of diagnostic ultrasound.

In addition to the video learning materials, the latest medical journals and textbooks are available for independent study through the education center. Likewise, an extensive and continually updated teaching file is on hand for review. This material is made available seven days a week.

Continuing Medical Education Courses

Continuing medical education (CME) courses offered by the Institute and the department of radiology vary in structure and length according to subject. Most courses last one week and are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of a single specialty area in ultrasound. Expert national and international guest speakers in diagnostic ultrasound, along with the physician and technical staff of the Institute, present the lectures and demonstrations. The 2000 schedule includes courses in Physics and Instrumentation; Cross-Sectional Anatomy, OB/Gyn, Abdomen Prostate, Heart, Vascular and Neonatal Neurosonography; Invasive Procedures; Fetal Echocardiography, Sonomammography; and Endovaginal Imaging. Physicians and Sonographers from this country and other nations regularly attend Jefferson's CME-approved programs to refresh their knowledge or as an introduction to a new subspecialty area within ultrasound.

The Leading Edge Program

In addition to the regularly scheduled CME programs, there is an annual conference, "The Leading Edge in Diagnostic Ultrasound." This three-day program provides participants with a detailed update and review of the latest developments in ultrasound and features a wide range of minicourses that focus on subspecialty areas of practice. Initially begun in 1980 as a local program, "The Leading Edge in Diagnostic Ultrasound" is now widely regarded as a national program and draws over 1,000 participants and manufacturer exhibitors from throughout the United States and the world.

College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University

The Jefferson College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University offers a fully accredited undergraduate degree program in diagnostic imaging. Barry B. Goldberg, MD, director of the ultrasound institute, is medical director and professor for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. Laurence Needleman, MD, is medical director for the Cardiovascular Technology Program. David C. Levin, MD, is medical director and professor for the Radiography Program. Charles Intenzo, MD, is medical director and associate professor for the Nuclear Medicine Program. Faculty from the institute also teach in the college: Joseph J. Darby, Jr., BS, RDMS, chief technologist for the Division of Ultrasound, and Larry D. Waldroup, BS, RDMS, technical manager for the ultrasound institute, hold faculty rankings as Clinical Instructors. David C. Levin, MD, chairman of the department of radiology, is a professor for the diagnostic imaging department of the college.

Visiting Fellowships

The visiting fellowship program provides physicians with a flexible, self-directed learning experience. Attesting to Jefferson's worldwide reputation in ultrasound, fellows come to Jefferson from medical centers in the United States and more than 40 other countries to learn from our experts. The department of radiology also sponsors a variety of visiting fellowship programs in other subspecialties of the field.

Academic visiting fellows have access to all courses and learning resources within the Institute education facility. In addition, clinical fellows round out their training and enhance their knowledge by attending ultrasound image interpretation sessions and observing radiologists perform ultrasound procedures.

A large and well-organized teaching file of ultrasound cases is available to visiting fellows for independent review and study, and materials and supplies necessary to make slides of the teaching file are also available. Many visiting fellows leave Jefferson with the necessary slides, videotapes and notes to develop effective ultrasound teaching programs in their own institutions. In some cases these programs have become affiliated with the Institute, which provides new educational materials in their native language, if possible, on an ongoing basis.

Office of International Exchange Services

Thomas Jefferson University sets a high priority on the exchange of ideas and information related to patient care, education and research with members of the international medical community. To facilitate such a task, the University provides support services to international visitors through the Office of International Exchange Services. This office works closely with Institute staff on issues such as immigration and visa requirements, housing and orientation for international visitors and guests.
