Opportunities to Advance the Institute
Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson Medical College is world-renowned
for the quality of its medical education, care, and research. Among the chief
reasons for Jefferson's success is a high level of patient-oriented care backed
by leading edge technology.
A leader in sustaining this effort is the Department of Radiology's Jefferson
Ultrasound Research and Education Institute.
Founded in 1992 to consolidate and strengthen existing efforts in diagnostic
ultrasound, the Institute is the world's largest, most widely-known proponent
of this important diagnostic option. The Institute's primary activities include
educating both national and international medical and allied health students
in ultrasound's fundamentals; training physicians in subspecialties such as
echocardiography, abdominal, obstetrical, and vascular ultrasound; and bringing
practicing physicians up to date on the latest research concepts and techniques.
All of these activities require substantial funding, not all of which can be
provided by University resources. To sustain Jefferson's leadership in these
vital roles and to guarantee the Institute's future strengths, gifts of $25,000
to $1 million or more are being sought from corporate, foundation, and private
gifts to strengthen the faculty, increase student aid, encourage research, enhance
care, and improve Jefferson's physical facilities.
The following opportunities represent the most important of the Ultrasound
Research and Education Institute's funding goals:
Education
- A named international fellowship for persons from other nations to study
ultrasound at Jefferson. This fellowship could support up to three fellows
for four months each or one fellow for an entire year.
Gift required: $25,000 a year for five years.
- A named international scholarship for an established physician to learn
advanced ultrasound principles and return to his or her native land as a teacher
affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University.
Gift required: $50,000 a year for five years.
- A named international research fellowship for support for an established
research oriented physician or scientist to work with our staff on a variety
of advanced research projects.
Gift required: $50,000 a year for five years.
- Funds to develop a new master's degree curriculum in diagnostic imaging
in conjunction with Jefferson's College Health Professions and funds to develop
a new PhD curriculum in ultrasound in conjunction with Jefferson's College
of Graduate Studies.
Gift required: $100,000 to $250,000.
- Funds to name and enhance the World Training Center for the Institute. Private
support is sought to expand training programs, equip additional laboratories,
and provide new training space.
Gift required: $500,000 to $1 million.

Training Materials
Funds for equipment and machinery to produce multilingual training videotapes
and interactive computer disks in languages that include Russian, Chinese, Ukrainian,
Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and other tongues and to convert videotapes to
the national electrical standards of participating nations. These tools are
important in extending the Institute's international programs.
Gift required: $10,000 to $50,000 a year.

Faculty Development
Endowment is sought to establish new named faculty posts ranging from assistant
to full professorships in electronic medicine including the fields of ultrasonics
and diagnostic imaging. Such gifts confer perpetual recognition by linking the
name of the donor or someone the donor wishes to honor, with the history and
tradition of Thomas Jefferson University.
Gift required: $500,000 to $1.25 million.

Acknowledging Private Generosity
In addition to naming professorships according to the wishes of their donors,
Thomas Jefferson University has a long tradition of acknowledging exceptional
private support by naming teaching and research spaces in honor of their donors.
Stories and photographs about major gifts and their donors are included in University
publications and, for major gifts, dedicatory plaques are mounted within or
near the new facility.

How to Make a Gift
The way that corporate and foundation gifts are made to nonprofit educational
institutions is clearly defined by state and federal law. An individual's gift,
however, may be made in a number of ways. The option chosen usually reflects
a combination of the donor's needs, interests, and economic circumstances.
Each option affords advantages in varying degree. In some cases, however, one
option may enable the donor to make a larger gift or to spread the gift, over
time, in ways not otherwise possible. Ultimately, the option providing the maximum
benefit to the donor is in the interest of both parties. Gifts may be made as
outright gifts of cash, securities, real property, planned gifts, including
trusts and annuities, life insurance, and bequests. In all cases, the advice
of a financial or legal advisor should be secured before reaching a final decision.

Gifts to Thomas Jefferson University qualify as tax deductions
under appropriate tax laws. Some donations entitle the donor to receive premiums
or membership benefits. Under certain circumstances, the fair market value of
these will reduce a donor's charitable deduction. In compliance with IRS ruling
67-246, donors will be advised in writing of such fair market value whenever
any such premium or membership benefit is offered.
