The clinical and experimental angiology unit - Dipartimento dell'Area Critica Medico Chirurgica, University of Florence - is chaired by Prof. Sergio Castellani, Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Diseases (Angiology). Course description: The course has been organized by the
Florence University of Medicine and will take place in Florence at
the Careggi University Hospital. This post graduate-course has been
designed to train specialists of different disciplines (emergency
medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, vascular surgery, vascular
medicine, radiology, geriatrics, anaesthesiology) to the
appropriate use of ultrasound techniques in the acute phase of the
main vascular disorders such as stroke, deep venous thrombosis, acute
limb ischaemia, and aortic dissection. Each day will be dedicated to
a different vascular compartment; the first day will address
cerebrovascular circulation; the second the abdominal vasculature, the
third the peripheral arteries and the fourth will describe venous
disorders. All theorical sessions will be followed by practical
demonstrations during the morning and by an "hands-on" session in
the afternoon. Official language: Italian

Educational Programming Opportunities:

The Angiology Unit is actively involved in the organization, coordination and promotion of "Vast Area" specialized activities in angiology and in the field of vascular imaging diagnostic techniques, in adherence with the Tuscany regional health care program.

The laboratory for vascular ultrasound investigations is situated within the area of the Institute of Clinica Medica Generale e Cardiologia and is part of a multidisciplinary unit that includes angiology as well as cardiology (transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, exercise stress echo procedures, and echo dobutamine tests) and internal medicine (abdominal echo procedures, thyroids etc.). This multidisciplinary unit has performed some 40,000 ultrasound investigations in the last 5 years using sophisticated ultrasound technology (ATL 300 HDI and ATL 5000 HDI; Acuson Sequoia 512, Multidop x 4 DWL, Sonos 5500).

The angiology laboratory carries on the whole set of non-invasive diagnostic investigations of different vascular beds for both in- and outpatients requirements: the Duplex examination of supraaortic vessels; the evaluation of intracranial hemodynamics and the search of embolic signals in the middle cerebral arteries through transcranial doppler; the screening of nephrovascular disease in hypertensive patients; diagnosis and follow-up evaluation of patients with aneurisms of abdominal aorta; the screening of carotid artery disease and obstructive peripheral vascular disease in patients affected by coronary heart disease; diagnosis and follow-up evaluations of patients with PAVD. The scanning of lower limbs for deep vein thrombosis.

The formation activity in clinical angiology and in the field of vascular Doppler ultrasound examination is carried on within the integrated course of cardiovascular diseases for the students of the University of Medicine and through a three year post-graduate course in angiology chaired by Professor Sergio Castellani. The formation activity consists also in organizing national training courses for the permanent formation of physicians, specialists in angiology, internal medicine, cardiology and neurology.
