Ultrasound for Primary Care
Part 1: ABDOMEN
April 14-15, 2012
July 28-29, 2012
September 8-9, 2012
November 17-18, 2012
Program Coordinator: Barry B. Goldberg, MD
Who Should Attend:
Physicians in primary care, family medicine, hospitalists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health professionals interested in providing Point-of Care ultrasound imaging, measurements and analysis of the abdomen in the clinical care setting. No prior experience with ultrasound or imaging is required. This is a entry-level program.
Program Description:
The two-day Ultrasound for Primary Care: Part 1 Abdomen program covers the most commonly encountered applications of ultrasound for point-of-care assessment of indicated structures in the abdomen. The program consists of lectures supplemented by demonstrations and case reviews. Hands-on experience with live models is an integral part of the course, providing an opportunity for clinicians to hone probe skills and develop the ability to recognize anatomic structures in the ultrasound image.
Emphasis is placed on an integrated approach combining details of normal ultrasound anatomy, hands-on skills and recognition of typical ultrasound patterns associated with the key indicated abdominal pathologies.
Lecture Topics:
Specific lecture topics include a review of principles of ultrasound physics, instrumentation and imaging techniques including Doppler, and ultrasound evaluation of:
· |
How Ultrasound Works and Why |
· |
Urgent Care Topics:
FAST and Pneumothorax
|
· |
Basic Probe Techniques – how to scan |
· |

Practicum Instruction |
A typical class day runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Educational Objectives:
Through attending this course, the participant should be able to:
· appreciate the relationship between acoustic physics & the sonographic representation of tissue
· recognize the acoustic representation of key anatomic structures
· identify indicated pathologies of the abdomen from ultrasound images
· understand and discuss the capabilities and limitations of POS ultrasound of the abdomen
