Jefferson Foundation : Jefferson License Plates
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. How much does the license plate cost?
A. The cost is a one-time fee of $75, which includes $24 for the state and a tax-deductible contribution of $51 for Jefferson.

Q. How long will it take to receive my plate once my application and check are mailed?
A. PennDOT requires a large initial order to begin processing the plates, and we have no way to estimate the time needed to reach the minimum. Once we make the first order, we will forward the applications to PennDOT monthly, and it will take an additional four to six weeks for PennDOT to process them. PennDOT will mail the license plate directly to you.

Q. Who do I contact if I don't receive my plate within 10 weeks?
A. Please e-mail Melissa Chirinos, associate director of alumni relations, Melissa.Chirinos@jefferson.edu.

Q. Can I transfer my current license plate number to my new plate?
A. No, numbers from previous plates are non-transferable.

Q. Can I request a particular number?
A. We're offering members of the Jefferson community the chance to pick their own numbers from 1 to 100. Include your top three choices with the application and check. After the first 100 plates, the state will assign the numbers.

Q. I have a customized license plate (i.e. vanity plate). Is there a way to have both the Jefferson plate and my vanity plate?
A. No. Pennsylvania law allows only one license plate per vehicle.

Q: If I lease my vehicle, am I eligible for the Thomas Jefferson University plate?
A: Yes, but you must download Form MV-1L (PDF) and have your leasing company fill it out and return it to you. Applications received without this form will be held until the form is filled out.

Q: I currently have license plates that indicate that I am disabled. Will my new plates reflect this?
A: Unfortunately, specialty plates cannot indicate disability. You must order a Person with Disability Parking Placard using Form MV-145A (PDF).

Q: Will I receive new registration stickers with my plate?
A: Yes. You will receive new registration stickers and a registration card when your plates are delivered.

Q: Can I get a Jefferson plate if I live outside Pennsylvania?
A: No. At this time, they are available only in Pennsylvania.

Q: What if I have a question that isn't answered here?
A. Please call Melissa Chirinos, (215) 503-7709.
