Joseph V. Cheung, MD, Ph.D
Division Director

The Division of Nephrology has nine full-time members.

Faculty have diverse clinical interests, including transplant nephrology, dialysis kinetics, peritoneal dialysis and diabetic renal disease. There is also a large research interest in diabetic nephropathy both from the clinical side and from the bench.

The division maintains an active role in education, clinical services and research. Educational programs include a weekly conference that features in-depth reviews of basic science and clinical nephrology. There are also weekly clinical conferences and Renal Grand Rounds as well as bi-weekly Journal Club and monthly biopsy conferences.

Through emphasis of pathophysiology, diagnosis and management, the resident acquires a working knowledge of the clinical approach to common renal disorders.

Research interests in the division include: predictors of end stage renal disease in African Americans, the role of TGF-b in diabetic nephropathy, the role of TGF-b in cyclosporine renal toxicity and immunosuppression, the role of bowel flora in uremic toxicity and evaluation of different immunosuppression protocols in renal transplantation.
