Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery

Recently, intracranial stents have been introduced for treatment of intracranial stenosis and for occlusion of aneurysms in the Circle of Willis. A stent which is movable and retrievable is not currently available. Ongoing research in the Division of Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery seeks to understand the mechanics needed for the development of such a stent. The deployment of these novel and improved stents would use the exact same protocol as that for coiling of the aneurysm. The stent would be deployed alone, or with coiled aneurysms to assess the degree of inflow inhibition to the aneurysm.

Clinical Studies in Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery

  • Outcome of patients with ruptured cerebral aneurysm who underwent endovascular coiling. PI: R. Rosenwasser.
  • Carotid occlusion surgical study (COSS). Surgical anastomosis of the superficial temporal artery to the middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) when added to the best medical therapy. PI: R. Rosenwasser.
  • Carotid revascularization endarterectomy vs. stent trial (CREST). PI: R. Rosenwasser. COIs: P. DiMuzio, A. Carabasi, J. Lombardi, R. Bell, D. Brock, C. Pineda
  • Long-term outcome following carotid balloon occlusion. PI: R. Rosenwasser.
  • Outcome from ruptured cerebral aneurysm in patients undergoing endovascular coiling and evacuation of intracerebral clot. PI: R. Rosenwasser. 
  • Retrospective five-year review of follow up angiograms on patients with cerebral aneurysms post-coil embolization. PI: R. Rosenwasser. 
  • Clinical review and outcome of patients following coil embolization of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. PI: R. Rosenwasser. 
  • Prospective multicenter feasibility trial to evaluate the safety and performance of Gore Embolic Liquid (GEL) used in presurgical embolization of cerebral arteriovenous malformations. PI: R. Rosenwasser.
  • Retrospective study to evaluate outcome of patients with pericallosal artery aneurysms. PI: R. Rosenwasser
  • Prospective randomized clinical study to compare mannitol and hypertonic saline for treatment of increased intracranial pressure. PI: R. Rosenwasser.
