Jefferson Hospital
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is one of Philadelphia's largest
medical centers, located at 11th and Walnut Streets in the Center
City district of Philadelphia. The 585 bed medical center occupies
several square blocks, and is constantly expanding to accommodate
new facilities. Jefferson Medical College is the largest private medical
school in the United States. For over 160 years, these institutions
have earned a reputation for outstanding patient care, research, and
education that have resulted in major advances in all branches of
medicine. With an endowment exceeding $150 million, Jefferson ranks
in the top 55 universities in the country in this area.
Most important, Jefferson is recognized for its consistently
high standard of medical care, with state-of-the-art facilities
in every department and prominent physicians at the forefront
of the newest medical techniques. The hospital boasts 68
specialty intensive-care beds, including a surgical ICU,
an intermediate surgical ICU, a surgical coronary care unit
and step-down unit, a neurosurgical ICU, a pediatric ICU,
and a large Level III intensive care nursery. The emergency
room, recently renovated, is a state-of-the-art facility
with Level III trauma capabilities and a heliport.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is recognized
as a national leader in its specialty. The hospital is a
tertiary referral center for high-risk obstetrics. The labor
and delivery unit is located in the Pavilion building, and
does approximately 2200 deliveries per year. The unit is
equipped for critical care obstetrics, intensive maternal
monitoring and ultrasound. The Department of Anesthesia provides
24-hour a day obstetrical anesthesia, and has an obstetrical
anesthesia fellowship. The Maternal Observation Unit is located
in the Pavilion building. This antenatal unit, with its trained
nursing personnel, is designed to care for complicated antepartum
patients and is managed by the maternal-fetal medicine division.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located in the Pavilion
Building. It is a Level III tertiary referral center, staffed
by board-certified neonatologists. It provides a broad range
of services, including ECMO, and serves as a training center
for the pediatric residency.
The hospital is continually expanding and renovating its
operating room space, and now boasts 31 operating rooms facilities
equipped for the latest operative technology, including all
types of laser surgery. These facilities are all utilized
extensively by the department, with over 1600 major gynecologic
procedures performed last year.
The residents' ambulatory care facility, known as Jefferson
Obstetrics and Gynecologic Associates (JOGA) is located in
a newly renovated space at 834 Chestnut Street. The facility
provides comprehensive outpatient services, with both general
and subspecialty sessions. Approximately 20,000 patients
per year are seen here. In addition, the full time faculty
have private practices (Womens' Medical Specialties and the
subspecialty practices) located in several offices in the
vicinity of the university in Center City as well as in the
surrounding suburbs.
The Scott Memorial Library, located in the Scott Building,
is a fully equipped university medical library. It features
2,300 journals and 126,000 volumes. It is staffed by 17 full-time
trained medical librarians, and features the latest available
informational technologies, including medical information
computer technologies.
