Other
Programs
Several
other "enrichment" programs have been developed within the
College and Department.
Resident Orientation: A full-day departmental
orientation for incoming housestaff, separate from the University
orientation, is held for the entering intern class each year.
Topics covered include specific job responsibilities of the
PGY 1 residents on various services; a surgical skills workshop;
Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS); pelvic anatomy and
fetal monitoring. Each incoming resident is assigned a "mentor" from
the exiting PGY 1 year; in addition, an "intern's manual" was
created which was designed to provide information deemed
useful for a PGY 1 in a compact and easy-to-read format.
Evaluations revealed the departmental orientation and intern's
manual to be an unqualified success.
Resident Retreat: Periodic resident retreats
to allow for a different type of educational experience.
Practice Preparation: The department conducts
lectures each year for PGY3 and PGY 4 residents on issues
in selecting a practice.
Philadelphia OB Society: The Department
sponsors attendence at lectures monthly for PGY 2 at the
dinner.
Laparoscopy Surgical Labs: These are done
at a live animal laboratory quarterly.
Clinical Skills Sessions: These are done
during the summer months to teach and evaluate specific skills. Emergency OB Drills: These are done every block on Labor and Delivery, along with members of the Nursing staff.
