Resident Assignments
Resident assignments are based on the principle of graduated
responsibility as greater levels of skill are achieved. The
training is divided between inpatient and outpatient experiences.
Resident Lecture Series Schedule
PGY 1: The intern year is divided into eight
rotations. The first year residents spend two months in the Family
Medicine Department, which is nationally recognized for its excellence.
Our interns then spend one rotation each on obstetrics and on gynecology
at Thomas Jefferson Hospital; one rotation at West Jersey Hospital; one rotation on night float; one week each on obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia; and one two-rotation block split between Surgical Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Clinic and Neonatal Intensive Care. A four week ultrasound course completes the year. The Obstetrics and Gynecology portion of the PGY 1 year provides a broad experience in general obstetrics and Gynecology. The experience at Thomas jefferson University Hospital and West Jersey Hospital expose our interns to both university and community hospital experiences.
PGY 2: This year is divided into eight
equal rotations. Four rotations, including General Obstetrics,
Maternal-Fetal
Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology, and Gynecologic Oncology are at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. At West Jersey Hospital, one block is
an OB rotation covering high risk patients,
labor and delivery, and some surgery, and one block is general Gynecology. Finally, daytime and
night float OB rotations at West Jersey complete the year.
During the second year each resident is required to identify
an individual research project with a member of the faculty
in an area of special interest.
PGY 3: This year is divided into eight
rotations. Residents spend one rotation on the General Gynecology
service at Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital. One rotation on Gynecologic
Oncology and two rotations on the Gynecology Service
are spent at West Jersey Hospital. The primary
emphasis during these rotations is operating room coverage
of gynecologic surgery. One rotation is spent as the PGY
3 Ambulatory Clinic Float combining a formal radiology experience
in vaginal and obstetric ultrasound, breast disease, and
first trimester abortion. This rotation includes a one-on-one
tutorial with one of our finest breast surgeons in order
to gain office and operating experience in the area of breast
disease; time in our Division of Ultrasound, in which time
they function as ultrasound technicians and receive hands-on
experience in obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound; office
experience in Menopause and Pediatric Gynecology with our
faculty; and an opportunity to spend time at Planned Parenthood
in order to learn first-trimester abortion. A day float and
night float rotation at Jefferson provides our senior residents
with experience running labor and delivery and opportunity
to hone their teaching skills. Finally, an elective/research
block allows exploration of other interests and away rotations.
PGY 4: The entire PGY 4 year is conducted
at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The year is divided
into eight equal rotations. During five of these rotations,
the residents spend time as chief of the following services:
General Obstetrics, General Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine,
Reproductive Endocrinology, and Gynecologic Oncology. An
outpatient rotation includes Genetics, Ultrasound and the
rest of the time on Urogynecology. A day float and night
float completes the year.
