If you do not know whether you are considered a Resident Alien or a Non-Resident Alien for tax purposes, please contact the Office of International Exchange Services.
If your country has a tax treaty with the U.S., you may claim the Treaty Article Number on your tax forms.
*Important: Countries with 2-year Retroactive Treaties
 India,
 Luxembourg,  Netherlands,
 Thailand, and the
 United Kingdom have a retroactive tax treaty. If you are a resident of the aforementioned countries, and plan to stay in the U.S. for more than 2 years (from the date you entered the U.S.), do not claim the treaty exemption when filing the 1040NR. Otherwise, you will have to repay the entire exempted amount for the 2 years, plus possible penalties.
