Residency

Neal Flomenberg, MD
Division Director
|
The Division of Medical Oncology provides medical expertise for multidisciplinary programs for the treatment and prevention of solid tumors and hematologic neoplasms. The faculty is composed of both full-time and geographic full-time physicians, as well as basic scientists. All are intimately involved in the research programs sponsored by the NCI-designated Kimmel Cancer Center based at Thomas Jefferson University.
Multidisciplinary teams focus on lung, GU, GI, head and neck cancers, on hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplantation in addition to general clinical services. The division has an active Developmental Therapeutics Program focused on Phase I, II, and III clinical trials originating at the Kimmel Cancer Center as well as in conjunction with the national cooperative groups such as Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), Gynecologic Oncologic Group (GOG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABBP) as well as in collaboration with various pharmaceutical companies.
Residents electing a rotation on Medical Oncology may focus on an inpatient, outpatient or consultative clinical service, or they may elect to perform a clinical research project that may be suitable for publication.
Residents become familiar with the evaluation of newly diagnosed malignancies as well as the methodology of selecting chemotherapeutic regimens. In addition, residents gain an appreciation of the interdisciplinary approach required in the long-term treatment of patients with cancer.
