IMMUNOPATHOLOGY/IMMUNOHISTOLOGY
The Immunopathology laboratory is under the directorship of Peter McCue, M.D. The technical director is Susan Paturzo. The residents' rotation in Immunopathology is one month in duration with opportunities for collaborative research with attending staff members involving elective rotation periods after the introductory rotation in the laboratory.
The principal goals of the Immunopathology rotation include exposure to all the underlying principles of the technical aspects of specimen preparation for the study by immunofluoresence or immunohistochemical techniques. In addition, diagnostic algorithms in immunohistochemical stains in the study of a wide variety of neoplasms, lymphocyte identification, cell surface receptors and cell proliferation markers are stressed.
The resident actively participates in the study of current cases and has access to an indexed library of previous cases studied by immunopathologic procedures. Additional activities in Immunopathology include autoimmune serology procedures, their underlying principles and clinical application. The laboratory staff directly supervising the residents performs evaluation of residents' performance in learning the components of the above program.
