Program for Advanced Study
The Program for Advanced Study (PAS) is designed to provide a more intensive experience in pathology for those students with appropriate ability and interest. Students qualify for the PAS by scoring in the top 20% of the class on the Foundations of Pathology written examination. PAS honor students are expected to:
1. Achieve a level of academic achievement in pathology throughout the year that falls within the top 20% of the class (determined at the end of the year).
2. Present verbally and in writing and/or submitting for publication a clinical case report during the academic year. Students will work with faculty members in this endeavor, and it is anticipated that the quality and subject matter of each case presentation is at a level that would merit publication in a peer-review journal.
3. Attend selected special departmental functions (Grand Rounds, Surgical Pathology and Autopsy Conferences, Surgical Pathology Journal Club).
4. View and participate in autopsy pathology, surgical pathology, and/or clinical laboratory medicine.
Successful completion of the PAS will result in the distinction of High Honors in Pathology at Jefferson Medical College as well as eligibility for induction into the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC) National Pathology Honor Society. Students are recognized for their achievement at a case presentation seminar and a formal ceremony at the end of each year. The titles of student presentations from past years are posted online for your information (see Pathology Web Site on Pulse). All students are encouraged to attend these outstanding student presentations.
