Fellowship > Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry - Didactics
Didactics
During the didactics portion, fellows of the first and second years meet on Wednesdays to participate in teaching seminars. The fellowship begins with introductory lectures on the child and adolescent psychiatric examination and a brief course of normal development. During this part of the program, “normal” children are interviewed by attendings with the fellows’ participation.
In the autumn, the didactic sessions begin with a continuous case conference, supervised by Dr. Henri Parens, a renowned child analyst. This is followed by Grand Rounds. After a break, two afternoon seminars are led by faculty. These are generally subdivided into courses, which take the format of seminars, journal clubs, or “live” patient interviews.
The content of the afternoon seminars alternates yearly so that within the two year fellowship, the following topics are covered: developmental psychopathology, normal development, treatment modalities (psychosocial), psychopharmacology, forensic psychiatry, cultural issues and critical appraisal skills. Every year, the second year fellows take the Family Systems course given by Dr. Steve Treat and the Council for Relationship, a Jefferson affiliate.
Fellows participate as a group; this ensures thorough exposure to topics and current approaches in child psychiatry during the two years. Given the seminar format, in addition to learning from the teaching attending, fellows benefit from colleagues’ areas of interest and expertise. The program is flexible, reserving room to tailor the program to the fellows’ interests and take advantage of exposure to visiting and local experts in the field.

During all rotations, in order to have protected time for didactics, supervision and outpatients, fellow’s clinical responsibilities on the units are covered on the didactic day by the attendings. If, during the first year, the fellows wish to see outpatients on days in addition to the didactics/outpatient day the outpatient clinic is open and the fellows have full access to their offices.
