Resident Activities
In addition to the training program, the Department supports a variety of activities for or involving residents.
Weekly Peer Meeting
Residents meet weekly for one hour to discuss mutual concerns among themselves and with faculty, and to get information about current news of the Department. One class each week spends part of this time meeting with the Program Director, to discuss issues specific to that class.
Movie Night
Hosted by Dr. Michael Vergare, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior. The residents gather for viewing and discussing a film. The films are selected by faculty with the goal of stimulating social, psychological, and other conversation in an open forum. This year, two films have been viewed. “Antoine Fisher” led to a discussion of how to create a therapeutic relationship with patients, and “Identify” sparked a lively conversation about dissociative symptoms and disorders.
Resident Retreat
The Department sponsors a yearly two-day retreat for residents. The main purpose of this activity is comprehensive review of the program by the residents, who submit a written report with recommendations to the Residency Director based on discussions at the Retreat. In addition to this important product, the Retreat is an eagerly anticipated chance for residents to enjoy each other’s company in pleasant and relaxing surroundings. The Retreat is planned and implemented by the residents. Clinical coverage during the Retreat days is provided by the faculty.
Welcoming Reception
Each year in July, the Department hosts a welcoming reception for incoming residents and their significant others. The reception is well attended by residents and faculty, who look forward to getting to know our new residents. In recent years, this reception has been held at the home of the Department Chair.
Graduation
Our tradition at Jefferson is for residents to take the lead in choosing a site and time for our graduation celebration. Most often this has been a graduation dinner, but in some years residents have preferred a brunch. Graduating residents and their families attend, along with a substantial number of lower-year residents and faculty. In addition to graduation certificates, faculty present awards to outstanding residents for the past academic year, and residents present awards for outstanding contributions to selected faculty.
