Awards
The Department recognizes outstanding work by residents in a series of yearly awards:
The Laughlin Award – This award, sponsored by the Laughlin Foundation, is
provided to program directors at select medical schools nationally. At Jefferson,
the award is given to the outstanding graduating resident.
The Outpatient Resident Award – This award is given to the member of the
PGY-3 or PGY-4 class judged most outstanding in outpatient work.
The Inpatient Resident Award – This award is given to the member of the
PGY-2 class judged to have the best overall performance during the first two
Years.
The Resident Teaching Award – This award is given to the resident who has made
The most outstanding contribution to teaching of medical students and other
residents. Medical students’ evaluation of resident teachers play a major part in
selection of this award.
The Daniel Lieberman Award – Given to the resident who has submitted the best
original published or unpublished paper.
The Child Psychiatry Award – Given to the resident in the general adult program
who has demonstrated the greatest proficiency in work with children and
adolescents.
In addition to these awards, it is our tradition for the residents to select two faculty members to honor each year. These awards are:
The Abraham Freedman Award – given in appreciation of dedicated commitment
to excellence in residency training.
The Robert Waelder Award – for distinguished and outstanding services as a
teacher in psychiatry.
