Nuclear Medicine Residency
The Nuclear Medicine Residency is a two-year program which fulfills all of the requirements of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. It is targeted to trainees having at least one year of clinical training in an ACGME-accredited program within any medical specialty.
Extensive training is provided in all areas of both nuclear imaging and therapy, with emphasis upon cardiovascular nuclear medicine, oncologic nuclear medicine, and endocrine nuclear medicine. Radionuclide functional studies of every major organ system are performed, including tumor imaging with radiolabeled peptides, monoclonal antibodies, and Positron emitters. Radioimmunotherapeutic procedures, a new are in nuclear oncology, has been instituted. Topics in cardiovascular nuclear medicine include myocardial SPECT with attenuation correction, participation in the supervision of stress testing, and plans are in progress for the performance of cardiac PET. Topics in nuclear endocrinology include thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal imaging, as well as somatostatin receptor tumor localization. In addition, the division is a large referral center for radioiodine therapy of benign and malignant thyroid diseases.
There are ample opportunities for basic and clinical research, particularly in the areas of PET, radioimmunotherapy, infection imaging with monoclonal antibodies, and in the evaluation of dementia. Current and past residents frequently present their work at annual specialty meetings such as the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. The Nuclear Medicine Division collaborates closely in many investigative projects with numerous clinical departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Neurology and Neurosurgery.
