Living in Philadelphia
One of the advantages of a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the chance to live in Philadelphia -- a city with history, charm and diversity. The hospital is conveniently located in Center City within walking distance of numerous theaters, museums, shopping areas, fine restaurants, ethnic neighborhoods and night life. Convenient on-campus housing is offered through the Housing Office of the University Office of Student Affairs. Many residents and interns also live off campus in Center City, Society Hill, South Philadelphia, as well as the Philadelphia suburbs and New Jersey.
The University is proud to be situated near the most historic square mile in American -- Independence National Historical Park. A few blocks east of the Jefferson campus is the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence was adopted) and Carpenter's Hall (site of the first Continental Congress).
Philadelphia features some of the best cultural offerings that are available in one city in the United States. It is home to the world famous Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of Music, the esteemed Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Benjamin Franklin Museum of Science. Professional teams like the Flyers, the Phillies, the Eagles and the 76ers offer lots of excitement. Restaurants, bars and nightclubs dot the city. Numerous events like the Philadelphia Blues Festival and the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display are held during the year at locations like Penn's Landing, Fairmount Park, South Street and the Sports Complex.
Jefferson is a participant in Philadelphia's robust scientific and intellectual community. The region has the second largest concentration of colleges and universities in the country, with five medical schools and numerous libraries and research institutions. As a member of the University Sciences Center, the nation's first urban research organization, Jefferson participates with 17 other member institutions in cooperative biomedical research that links scientific findings from the laboratory to government and industry.
Philadelphia's location has distinct geographic advantages. The city is situated in the corridor between the New York City and the Baltimore/Washington DC region. Travel to and from Jefferson and its affiliates are easy due to an efficient network of roadways and public transportation systems. New York City, the Jersey shores, the Pocono Mountain region and the Baltimore/Washington DC metro area are all within a two-hour drive from Philadelphia.
Jefferson has been cited for its safe campus environment at the First National Jeane Clery Awards Dinner, sponsored by Security on Campus Inc. -- the only national nonprofit organization geared solely to the prevention of campus violence and crime and to assisting campus victims in the enforcement of their legal rights. Experienced and qualified security personnel interact in a network with the Philadelphia Police Department, the SEPTA Police and the Pennsylvania State Police to ensure student and employee safety. An on-campus escort service and extra security details for special events, no matter how small, can be requested.
