Residency Program

    • Jefferson is the second oldest medical school/hospital in the country.

    • Jefferson Medical College is America’s largest private medical school.

    • Thursday Conferences (“protected time” – NO PAGERS)  Thursday mornings are dedicated to resident education from 7 A.M. to 11 A.M.  Sessions include weekly M & M conferences, Grand Rounds, didactic lectures, journal clubs, case presentations and other interactive learning sessions.  An anatomist from Jefferson Medical College provides basic anatomical lectures and oversees laboratory time.  Residents are excused from all patient care responsibilities during these lectures and activities.  Pagers are collected and answered by the Education Division secretary of the Department of Surgery.

    • Boards- For the past 10 years, 98 percent of graduating Jefferson surgical residents have passed both the written and oral boards. Of residents who complete Jefferson's surgical program, about 20 percent remain in general surgery and 80 percent seek further specialty training. View Chart

    • Laparoscopic and Simulation Training Laboratory- our Surgical Skills Lab provides residents with the resources to enhance their suturing and knot tying skills as well as to competently perform more advanced laparoscopic skills. 

    • Year of Research
      Residents spend one to two years in the laboratory and usually work within one of the laboratories in the Department.

Philadelphia

    • Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States and the second largest on the East Coast.

    • Philadelphia is a big sports town with nine teams including Eagles (football), Phillies (baseball), Flyers (hockey), 76ers (basketball),  Kixx (indoor soccer), Wings (indoor lacrosse), Phantoms (minor league hockey), the Soul (arena football).

    • Fairmount Park in Philadelphia is the largest city park, with over 8,000 acres

    • Elfreth’s Alley in Philadelphia is America’s oldest street in continuous use.

    • The King of Prussia Mall, the largest mall on the East Coast, is a 20 minute drive from center city Philadelphia (there is no sales tax on clothing in Pennsylvania.)

    • The Italian Market in South Philadelphia is the oldest and largest outdoor market.

    • The Philadelphia Tribune is the oldest African American newspaper.

      New York – 2 hour drive 
      Washington DC – 2 ½ hour drive
      Atlantic City – 45 minute drive
      Pocono Mountains – 1 ½ hour drive
