Dr. Cataldo Doria in the Operating Room

Ever since 1972, when it performed its first kidney transplant, Jefferson has
been a leader in transplantation. Jeff surgeons perform approximately 100 kidney,
5-10 pancreas, and 40 liver transplants each year, as well as living-donor
nephrectomies and multi-organ retrievals on cadavers. As part of the Delaware
Valley Transplant Program, Jefferson rotates with other member hospitals on
a local schedule of cadaver-kidney procurements. For liver or pancreas transplants,
Jefferson surgeons perform their own procurements, locally or at remote locations.
Residents have a one month rotation to the transplantation service in their third year. On a daily basis they interact closely with faculty members, who make rounds, assist residents in making major clinical decisions and manage immunosuppression. Weekly hepatic pancreas and renal transplant conferences fill out the didactic schedule. Resident training in outpatient care includes three clinics each week, in which the staff follows renal and hepatic transplantation patients.
The transplant service's focus goes beyond patient care in the clinic and includes active research protocols in new immunosuppressive agents. Other research protocols address specific questions related to transplantation.
In recent years Jefferson's Transplant Division has developed as a center for pancreas transplantation as well.
