Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- How long does it take for an MTA to be completed?
- OTT has records of all my previous MTAs. Do I need to complete an MTA Questionnaire for a new MTA request?
- Can I receive or ship the material(s) before an MTA is fully executed?
- The scientist who created the material has given me permission to receive or provide the material. Is an MTA required?
- I am receiving the same materials again from the same scientist. An MTA was previously executed.
Is another MTA required? - The mice that I am receiving will be sacrificed right after they arrive. The mice are not for breeding.
Is an MTA required? - I am only sending a small amount of material (e.g. plasmid, cell, tissue). Do I need an MTA?
- Can I share the materials I received from other institutions with my colleagues next door?
- The person who provided materials to me passed away or was no longer in possession of these materials.
Can I send these materials to researcher(s) at other institution(s)? - I want to send some material(s) to my collaborator(s) at other institution(s). Is an MTA required?
- I purchased material from a repository (e.g. Jackson Laboratory, Addgene), and I would like to share the material with a colleague. Do I need an MTA?
How long does it take for an MTA to be completed?
In calendar year 2012, MTAs were completed in an average of 31 business days, of which OTT was responsible for 4 days. Most MTAs take a much shorter time.

OTT has records of all my previous MTAs. Do I need to complete an MTA Questionnaire for a new MTA request?
Yes.
Can I receive or ship the material(s) before an MTA is fully executed?
No.
The scientist who created the material has given me permission to receive or provide the material.
Is an MTA required?
Yes, because the scientist is not the owner of the material. The authorized official of the owning institution, where the material was created, has to provide such permission.

I am receiving the same materials again from the same scientist. An MTA was previously executed.
Is another MTA required?
No, unless the material is for a different research scope or if the previous MTA specified the quantity of material transferred.
The mice that I am receiving will be sacrificed right after they arrive. The mice are not for breeding.
Is an MTA required?
Yes, unless the authorized official of the providing institution states otherwise in writing.
I am only sending a small amount of material (e.g. plasmid, cell, tissue). Do I need an MTA?
Yes, an MTA is needed for any outgoing transfer of compounds and biological materials.
Can I share the materials I received from other institutions with my colleagues next door?
No. An MTA is intended for a researcher with a specific research scope.
The person who provided materials to me passed away or was no longer in possession of these materials. Can I send these materials to researcher(s) at other institution(s)?
No. The materials are owned by the institution where they were created, and that institution must give its permission.
I want to send some material(s) to my collaborator(s) at other institution(s). Is an MTA required?
Yes.
I purchased material from a repository (e.g. Jackson Laboratory, Addgene), and I would like to share the material with a colleague. Do I need an MTA?
Yes, because repository materials are purchased under MTAs that do not permit further transfer.
