Course Name 48 Hr Paramedic Refresher Course
Course Description This course is designed to review the core curriculum of the paramedic program in accordance with the Department of Transportation standards. This course will meet the 48-hour National Registry refresher requirements (section 1A) for currently certified Nationally Registered paramedics and the refresher course requirements for individuals wishing to take the National Registry certification examination for the first time. A National Registry certification examination will be scheduled in the region after the course is completed. The course is held on five consecutive Wednesdays.

Curriculum:
Module I – Airway/Ventilation Management
Includes review of basic airway methods, FROPV, Duel-Lumen airways, Translaryngeal Jet Insufflation and pediatric airway management.

Module II – Cardiovascular
Reviews pharmacology usage, cardiac pacing, MI, Heart Failure, Hypertensive crisis, Cardiogenic shock and Cardiac Arrest management.

Module III – Medical
Anaphylaxis & Allergic reactions, Near-Drowning and toxicology

Module IV – Trauma
Patient Assessment and Shock will be discussed along with review of Head Injuries, Spinal Injuries, Thoracic Injuries and Abdominal Trauma. Skills sessions will also include performing a rapid trauma assessment, needle chest decompression, and spinal and fracture immobilization.

Module V – Pediatrics
Assessment and history taking will be reviewed along with a review of pediatric emergencies including croup, bacterial tracheilitis, epiglottitis, asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, shock, dysrhythmias and pediatric trauma.

Module VI – Operations
This final segment will review Ambulance Operations, scene and personal safety, warning signs of potentially violent situations and management of violent patients.

Prerequisites Current Paramedic certification or completion of approved Paramedic Didactic program.
