Course Name Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for EMT-Basics
Course Description

This course has been designed for EMT–Basics who would like to expand their knowledgebase in emergency cardiac care and resuscitation. Many times, EMT's are placed in positions that require them to assist Advanced Life Suport (ALS) Providers, but the necessary tasks are not part of their initial EMT training. The ACLS-B program was developed to provide EMT's with a knowledge base that will not only make htem feel more comfortable in the ALS setting, but also allow them to become primary participants in the care of the ALS patient. Quoted from the AAOS "ACLS for EMT-Basics" text by Mike Smith, MICP.

Some of the major core topics include:

  • The EMT–B and the Advanced Life Support Team: The team approach (goals for patient care)
  • Airway Evaluation and Control (airway anatomy, mechanical considerations, how gas exchange occurs)
  • From Angina to AMI: The Cardiac Care Continuum (cardiac patient assessment, progression of disease)
  • Rhythms of the Heart (the heart as a pump, fundamentals of cardiac rhythm analysis)
  • Electrical Interventions in Cardiac Care (defibrillation, AICDs, pacing, cardioversion)
  • The Fundamentals of Cardiac Pharmacology (common cardiac drugs, intravenous therapy)
  • Challenging Resuscitation Situations (stroke or brain attacks, risk factors for stroke, hypothermia)
  • Legal Considerations (obtaining consent to treat, “Good Samaritan” laws, advance directives)
  • Provider Care: Taking Care of You! (the stress of EMS, death and dying, reaching out to others)
  • And many more interesting and thought provoking topics

EMT–Basics will be introduced to true life resuscitation through “Megacode” scenarios and much more.
