At the Career Fair
What to expect:
- Lots of students! There may be lines to speak with some employers.
- Giveaways. Feel free to take some swag, but don’t overdo it!
- Employers may ask you to apply online and not accept your hardcopy resume.
Step 1: Arrive with plenty of copies of your resume. Bring a folder or portfolio, and avoid bringing large bags or backpacks. You will receive a name tag, and you should place it on the right side of your chest.
Step 2: Take a moment to collect yourself, and find an employer on your list. Consider starting with an employer on the bottom of your list if you feel nervous, then from there go and speak with organizations that are your highest priority. Avoid meeting employers with a friend; you will make a better impression on your own.
Step 3: Begin contact with a firm handshake, a smile, and eye contact. Introduce yourself (give your 30-second pitch, if appropriate), and ask question to get the conversation moving.
Step 4: Give the representative your full attention, be positive and conversational, and show your personality. Speak clearly and confidently.
Step 5: Ask about the hiring procedure. If they are accepting resumes in person, offer yours, otherwise find out how to follow up online.
Step 6: Ask for a business card (you’ll need them to send thank you letters/make follow-up calls/e-mails).
Step 7: Thank the representative for their time. Make sure not to spend too much time speaking with one organization.
Step 8: Move on to the next table!
