Jefferson requires all matriculated students to have health insurance, and to complete the enrollment/waiver process for each academic year (September 1st through August 31st).

Students in the following categories are exempt from the health insurance requirement at this time:

  • Department of Occupational Therapy - OTD Program
  • Jefferson School of Population Health - Certificate Programs or Online Programs
  • Department of Professional & Continuing Studies - Non-degree

Yes, your status as a student is separate from your employment.   Jefferson requires all matriculated students to have health insurance, and to complete the enrollment/waiver process for each academic year (September 1st through August 31st).  If you have health insurance of your own that meets the minimum requirements, you just need to fill out a waiver request.  For instructions on how to do so, please visit http://www.jefferson.edu/university/academic-affairs/

In order to qualify for a waiver, your insurance must meet at least the following minimum requirements.

  • The plan provides in-patient care in the Philadelphia area.*
  • The plan provides out-patient care in the Philadelphia area.* Coverage for emergency-only care does not satisfy this requirement.
  • The plan provides for ancillary procedures, including laboratory tests and radiology.
  • The plan provides for outpatient and in-patient mental health care in the Philadelphia area.*
  • The plan includes prescription drug coverage.
  • This coverage will remain in force through the end of the academic year (August 31st).**

    * For students participating in distance learning, coverage must be in effect for your area of permanent residence.

** If your insurance will not be in effect for the entire academic year due to a life change event, you may qualify for a partial waiver during the period that your insurance will cover, and will then have to enroll in the school-sponsored insurance plan for the remainder of the academic year.

Please note that full-time international students, including but not limited to those in F-1 or J-1 status, may not qualify for a waiver. Full-time international students must enroll in the school-sponsored insurance plan unless their current plan meets the above minimum requirements AND is approved by the Office of International Affairs.

The University reserves the right to audit all waivers in order to ensure compliance with the University insurance requirements. Please be sure to retain a copy of your insurance policy as you may be asked to provide this documentation.

All matriculated students that are enrolled in the Jefferson Schools of Health Professions, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Population Health are eligible to enroll in the school-sponsored health insurance plan.  Eligible students who do enroll may also insure their dependents.  For additional information, please visit www.firststudent.com

For life change enrollments and spring semester or pre-fall/summer semester enrollments, the cost of the insurance will be pro-rated for that period of time.

The school-sponsored health insurance plan through United HealthCare is a very comprehensive plan with extensive benefits.  It’s designed to minimize the out of pockets costs for students.  Additionally, there is not a pre-existing conditions exclusion in the plan.

For annual enrollments, the cost of the insurance will be billed to your student tuition account in two installments – half will be assessed to your fall invoice and half to your spring invoice.  For life change enrollments and spring semester or pre-fall/summer semester enrollments, the cost of the insurance will be billed to your student tuition account in one lump sum.

Please note the following procedures for enrolling or waiving health insurance coverage for the 2013-14 academic year. All enrollments and waivers must be completed using the online process outlined below.
