The Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology (BMP) program draws its faculty from numerous departments at Thomas Jefferson University, including Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, Microbiology & Immunology, Cancer Biology, Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Neuroscience, Medicine and Pathology.

The scientific focuses of these faculty members fall into three broad research areas: Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology, Chemical & Structural Biology and Molecular Biology & Gene Regulation.

Research in Chemical & Structural Biology at Thomas Jefferson University aims to explore the function of biological systems at the molecular level, and to leverage the outcomes of that exploration to develop novel disease treatments. Important molecular recognition events, such as receptor-ligand and protein-nucleic acid interactions, as well as the molecular mechanisms of catalysis, signal transduction and force generation, are probed using a broad range of biophysical tools. These tools include x-ray crystallography, high-throughput screening, rapid kinetics and high-content imaging. Scientists training within this research emphasis develop a quantitative understanding of key cellular processes that contribute to our fundamental knowledge of human biology and disease.

Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology

Research in Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University broadly explores the mechanisms of cellular signal transduction pathways and their dysregulation in disease. The interaction of ligands with their receptors and the resultant effects on cellular physiology are probed using state-of-the-art techniques in biochemistry, cell biology, imaging and model organisms. The research focuses on a wide range of cellular signaling molecules, include G protein-coupled receptors, G proteins, receptor tyrosine kinases, intracellular kinases and phosphatases, nuclear hormone receptors, integrins and proteins involved in apoptosis and membrane trafficking. Discoveries from these laboratories are being actively translated into novel diagnostics and therapeutics in cancer pharmacology, neuropharmacology and cardiovascular pharmacology.

Research in Molecular Biology & Gene Regulation broadly investigates the genetic control of cellular physiology in both normal and diseased states. Critical cellular processes dependent on gene transcription and translation are explored at the molecular level using a combination of advanced technical approaches involving recombinant DNA technology, high-throughput genetic analysis, cell culture and model systems, transgenic animals and high resolution imaging. Research areas include genetic and epigenetic control of gene expression, chromatin structure and function, mechanisms of RNA processing, gene therapy, control of ribosomal protein synthesis, regulation of the cell cycle and protein folding and misfolding inside the cell. Students who select this area of emphasis gain expertise in a broad range of fundamental methodologies used to investigate cellular mechanisms in the post-genome era.
