Students spend a substantial portion of the first year and part of the second year in course work.  A course in the 'Foundations of Biomedical Science', GC550 part of the core curriculum, is required of all incoming graduate students. This course provides a solid introduction to biochemistry, cell biology and genetics.  Program requirements include courses in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, developmental biology, and pathology.  Advanced courses can be selected from either the CDB program or other programs in the School of Biomedical Sciences.  Courses in 'Writing a Research Grant' and 'Statistical Analysis' are required of all graduate students at the University.

The University enrolls more than 3500 students. In the School of Biomedical Scineces there are about 450 students, of which about 130 are full-time PhD candidates. For 20014-2015, there are 28 students 5 MD, PhD students in the Cell and Developmental Biology Program. A low student to faculty ratio is maintained to ensure an optimal learning environment for our students. The student body is diverse. There is a Graduate Student Association (GSA) that coordinates many cultural and recreational activities as well organizing community projects.

2014-2015 Liaisons for the Cell & Developmental Biology Graduate Program (CDB)

The Cell & Developmental Biology Student Liaisons are an important part of our program.  They act as approachable intermediaries between the CDB student body and the CDB program director. Especially, during the first year of the program, they are the 'go to people' of the students who may have concerns or need assistance to outline how to approach areas of the program. They assist the education coordinator with support concerning special events and during the application and interviewing process of candidates.

Liaisons have their position for 2 years. After the 2 years the liaisons will then choose candidates to replace them.

Research Facilities

Research Facilities

Program faculty laboratories are housed in research buildings fully equipped for investigations in cellular and molecular biology. These laboratories have active, NIH-funded research programs in a variety of areas. Research facilities available within the program cover all of the contemporary methods of cell and molecular biology. The University houses an outstanding biomedical research library.

Thomas Jefferson University is located in an attractive and safe area of Center City Philadelphia, within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, concert, theater halls, museums, and numerous historic sites. There are a number of intercollegiate and professional sports events. New York, Washington, DC, Atlantic City, the mountains, and the seashore are all within easy access. Living expenses in Philadelphia are comparable to those in other East Coast metropolitan areas. Student housing is available on campus as well as in neighborhoods that are within walking distance of the campus.
