English Language Proficiency

All international students and U.S. permanent residents must demonstrate English language proficiency as one of the conditions for admission to Thomas Jefferson University.  Students must submit official TOEFL scores or fulfill one or more of the conditions necessary to waive the English language proficiency requirement.  TOEFL or IELTS scores are valid for two years; scores older than two years will not be considered.

  • Report scores on the centralized application system (TJAPP or OTCAS), but request official scores to be sent to Thomas Jefferson University.
  • Professional & Continuing Studies (Jeff-at-Night) requests official scores to be sent to Thomas Jefferson University.

Request official scores be sent to the centralized application system (CASPA, PTCAS). 

TOEFL requirement will be waived if you have:

  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • At least 60 college credits earned from no more than three (3) U.S. colleges or universities.
  • U.S. national or state licensure or certification in a nursing or allied health field. (Certain certification may not be sufficient to demonstrate proficiency.)
  • Score of 508 or higher on the Critical Reading (formerly Verbal) section for the SAT for applicants entering Thomas Jefferson University directly from high school.
  • Citizenship from a country where English is an official language (PDF).
