Jefferson College of Health Professions Occupational Therapy Students Attend AOTA/NBCOT Student Conclave

Eight students from the Jefferson College of Health Professions Department of Occupational Therapy attended the 2013 American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)/National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Student Conclave in Jacksonville, Fla., from November 15-16.

The Jefferson students who attended the event were:

  • Jocelyn Dressel
  • Amy Gottesman
  • Ryan Laliberte
  • Preston Lockwood
  • Erin Shervinskie
  • Emily Tetley
  • Kristina Toussaint
  • Alex Wolfgang-Price

Student Conclave is an annual event for occupational therapy students from around the country to share ideas, discuss the future of the profession and learn about the NBCOT licensure exam, resumes and interviewing.

The 2013 conclave hosted a range of sessions, including How to Land Your First Job, Being an Evidence-Based Practitioner: Fulfilling the Promise of the Centennial Vision, Ethics and Fieldwork and New Practitioner Panel: Transition to the First Year of Practice. Attendees also had the privilege to hear talks given by Ginny Stoffel, PhD, OT, BCMH, FAOTA, president of AOTA, and Amy Lamb, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA, vice president.

The students emphasized how much Jefferson prepared them for this event through their coursework, fieldwork and workshops. “Student conclave was one of the best opportunities Jefferson has offered me,” said Tetley. “We all had a great time and were able to further our professional development. Student conclave also gave me more experience for future conferences, such as the annual AOTA conference in the spring, which I am looking forward to attending. I highly recommend for all future students to attend.”

Students applied to attend the conclave and received a travel-stipend from the Department of Occupational Therapy through a one-page essay stating why each student felt they should be selected to attend and how they would share their share their new knowledge with classmates upon returning from the conclave.   You can read more about the 2013 NBCOT Student Conclave sessions on their website.
