Department of General Studies changes name to Department of Professional and Continuing Studies

The Jefferson School of Health Professions’ Department of General Studies, home of Jeff-at-Night, will now be known as the Department of Professional and Continuing Studies, effective immediately.

For many years, the main objective of the department was to provide general education courses to satisfy basic requirements for degree completion. In recent years, the department’s scope has expanded to offer a wider variety of graduate and undergraduate courses, specialized certificate courses in teaching and learning, English as a Second Language, and medical coding as well as intermediate and advanced management degree offerings, health management information systems and interprofessional specialized courses.

“This new designation provides a description that focuses on education for many levels of interest, second career seekers and those looking for both personal and professional improvement,” says Department Chair John C. Lewis, EdD. “The title suggests a more broad definition inviting those willing to start and complete their post-secondary education, and for others to work toward further professional development.”

In addition to the name change, the department has moved into a new home in the Edison Building: 130 S. 9th Street, 5th floor. Learn about academic programs and view the registration brochure online on the Department of Professional and Continuing Studies homepage.
