Overview

The Department of Dermatology's world class research programs facilitate clinical studies, investigate advances in dermatologic therapies and engage in studies of genetic skin diseases, connective-tissue disorders and skin cancers. The Department is also internationally renowned as an education facility, providing residency training in dermatology, rotation programs for physician training in related specialties such as Family Medicine, education of medical students and certificate programs for international students. In 1998, the Department was ranked highest in National Institutes of Health funding among dermatology departments nationwide.

Patient Care

We provide compassionate clinical care for thousands of patients in the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley from many diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. We offer comprehensive care in general medical dermatology as well as a wide range of specialty services such as our Laser Surgery and Cosmetics Center, Pediatric Dermatology Center, Scleroderma Center, Pigmented Lesion Clinic, Psoriasis Center, and Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic. In addition, our physicians work in collaboration with the Kimmel Cancer Center and the Autoimmune Disease Center.

Education

We provide medical students, residents (dermatology, family medicine, pediatrics, pathology), and fellows rotations and research opportunities throughout the academic year.

Research

Our research department continues to be a leader in the nation. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards summary for fiscal year 2012, we totaled $2,492,663 in funding. We are ranked in the top ten amongst dermatology departments in the nation and number two within Thomas Jefferson University's departments. Among the top researchers in dermatology is our own, Chair Jouni Uitto, MD, PhD.

Community Service

Our department prides itself in our community partnerships. Our community services involve annual free skin cancer screenings and the Miles for Melanoma 5K to raise melanoma awareness.
