Medical Education Fellowship

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is proud to announce its new one-year Medical Education Fellowship for graduating emergency medicine residents. Our intensive Fellowship is geared for residents seeking advanced training in pedagogy and learning theory; instructional design; medical simulation; and patient safety (PS) and clinical quality (CQ).  The goal of the Fellowship is to prepare the Fellow for a highly successful career as an educational leader in academic emergency medicine.

Informed by the principles of Experiential Learning Theory, Transformative Learning Theory, and Self-Directed Learning Theory, the Medical Education Fellowships offers the prospective Fellow(s) the skillset to adapt to an ever-changing learning environment and educational landscape. The Fellowship will provide formalized training in adult learning in clinical and academic medicine, and will use simulation and PS/CQ tools as vehicles to inform educational initiatives in undergraduate and graduate curricula, as well as faculty development programming and continuing medical education. In addition, the Fellow will identify a specific area of academic interest in the realm of education, and will be given the resources and time to develop his/her productivity within this specified domain. The Education Fellow will work clinically as an attending physician in the Emergency Departments (ED) of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.

The Fellowship year will be divided into four pillars of study that will continuously complement one another throughout the yearlong program.

Instructional Design

The fellow will develop the skills to become an effective academic instructor and leader within an educational training program at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or faculty development levels. Provisions will be made to have the fellow attend the ACEP Teaching Fellowship, as well as pursue formalized study in education through a Masters or certificate program.* The fellow will also be part of the MedStudio Team, which incorporates design thinking and design workshops in undergraduate and graduate medical education.

Medical Simulation

Through involvement in simulation-based medical education , the fellow will acquire the skills to effectively deliver simulation-based education. Fellows will receive advanced training in scenario design and debriefing. Provisions will be made to have the fellow attend the 5-day Simulation Instructor Course at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, and will spend one week at the Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning (IMSAL) in New York.

Patient Safety & Clinical Quality

The fellow will receive training in the academic and educational aspects of clinical quality and patient safety. He/she will collaborate with patient safety leaders to apply quality improvement tools, as well as pedagogical theory, to design and execute educational programs and interventions that will promote patient safety at Thomas Jefferson University. The fellow will have the opportunity to complete the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety at the Jefferson College of Population Health.*

Elective Domain

The fellow will choose a specific area of academic interest to develop during the fellowship. He/she will be paired with an expert mentor in the area. Educational elective domains to choose from will include ultrasonography, professionalism, telehealth, international medicine, and research.

Logistics

Applicants: Graduates of an ACGME-accredited EM Residency Program

Duration: 1 academic year

Number of Fellows (2015/16): 1-2

Clinical Shifts: 16 clinical hours per week
