First-year fellows will divide their experience equally between general hematology, solid tumor oncology and hematologic malignances/blood and marrow transplantation. Rotations switch on a monthly basis. The year includes 4 weeks of vacation time and one month of elective. During the first year, all rotations are at the Thomas Jefferson University site in Center City, Philadelphia.
Second-year fellows will continue the clinical experience in general hematology, solid tumor oncology and hematologic malignances/blood and marrow transplantation. Fellows who elect a research track will have the second year "front-loaded" to allow them the opportunity to start in the basic science laboratories as early as possible.
Third-year fellows' years will vary depending on their chosen path. Fellows may elect to do clinical or basic science research or to pursue a more in depth clinical experience.
All first- and second-year fellows will have two continuity clinics per week. Third-year fellows will continue with two continuity clinics unless they choose an intensive basic science track. Fellows who choose a dedicated research track will decrease the continuity clinic experience to one half day per week during the third year. Over the course of three years, most fellows will have 24 months each dedicated to Hematology, Hematologic Malignancy/Blood and Marrow Transplant and Solid Tumor Oncology. All fellows will participate in the multidisciplinary oncology experiences as well.
Throughout the year, fellows will be entirely off duty at least one day out of seven when averaged over a four week period. We adhere to the ACGME requirement for an 80-hour work week. There is no in-house overnight call.
