Research & Clinical Interests

Dr. Sunil Sharma joined Thomas Jefferson University / Hospital Jan 21, 2013. This is part of a major new effort to expand sleep expertise in the in-patient setting and he will uniquely bridge the Jefferson Sleep Disorders Center, with initiation of a new in-patient consultative service for patients with sleep disordered breathing.

Dr. Sharma will have a full-time appointment as an Associate Professor & clinician educator at Thomas Jefferson University with his clinical time being split between Jefferson Sleep Disorders Center and the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Sharma was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine & Pitt County Memorial Hospital for the past 5 years, where he initiated the sleep program at the University, with accreditation by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, and was medical director of the sleep program at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He has board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep medicine. Dr. Sharma completed his medical degree in India, an internal medicine residency at Cook County Memorial Hospital in Chicago, pulmonary & sleep fellowship at Univ. of WI in Madison, and a critical care fellowship at Medical College of WI in Milwaukee. He has an active medical license in PA.

Dr. Sharma is an experienced clinician educator, with an active practice that has included outpatient pulmonary & sleep clinics, in-patient consultative practice, and additional expertise in caring for patients with the complex pulmonary hypertension syndrome. He has great deal of experience in interpreting a variety of sleep studies as well as treating the spectrum of sleep disorders. Dr. Sharma also has experience in performing right heart caths and managing pulmonary hypertension, with particular emphasis in non-resolving thromboemboli.

Dr. Sharma has had various teaching responsibilities including core lectures for medical students; a variety of residency & fellowship lectures in sleep disorders and pulmonary medicine over 10 years. Dr. Sharma has organized (as a director or co-director) 4 annual CME programs in sleep medicine over the past 5 years.

Dr. Sharma lists a total of 20 publications, with the majority being as a first author and published over the past 2-3 years. These include original investigations, reviews, and case reports. He does not have current extra-mural funding but has obtained several smaller foundation grants in the past as well as local awards for research.

Dr. Sharma has given a variety of invited lectures as well as presented abstracts at national and international meetings. He has shown initiative and leadership in organizing courses, opened sleep labs, played leadership roles in hospital and university committees at several institutions.
