Faculty Awards

Jefferson Medical College offers a number of awards to faculty for various accomplishments during the year.

Class Day Awards

The Alpha Omega Alpha Volunteer Clinical Faculty Awards. Volunteer clinical faculty members are often inadequately appreciated and rarely recognized. Alpha Omega Alpha’s Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award is presented annually to recognize a community physician not on the full-time or part-time faculty, who effectively and generously donates his time, skill, and experience and contributes with distinction to the education and training of Jefferson medical students. Recipients of this award are not eligible to receive it more than once. Nominees need not be members of Alpha Omega Alpha, nor does the award confer Alpha Omega Alpha membership. Nominations may be made by all clinical students, with the recipient chosen by student members of the Alpha Omega Alpha Chapter.

Blockley-Osler/Dean’s Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching. Presented to a Physician Member of the Affiliate Faculty who exemplifies the ideals and teachings of Sir William Osler: Greatness as a teacher in molding the character of his/her student, an appreciation of his/her students and an inspiration to them, an exponent of modern clinical medicine, taught at the bedside, an intimate knowledge of his subject and a thoroughness in investigation, spontaneous affection for his students and for his patients, gifted with clear, forceful expression, graceful humility, tireless, unselfish service, kindness sympathy, generosity, and charity to all men capacity for exact observations, patience and avoidance of short cuts, a life steeped in tireless and unselfish service.

The James B. Erdmann Award for Excellence in Interprofessional Education. Presented to a Jefferson Medical College Faculty Member.  Thomas Jefferson University Interprofessional Education Award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in interprofessional education and whose efforts have impacted collaboration among all colleges to the benefit of students.

The James B. Erdmann Award for Excellence in Interprofessional Practice. Presented to a faculty or staff member of Thomas Jefferson University or Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.  Jefferson Interprofessional Practice Award is given to a practitioner/clinician who demonstrates excellence in interprofessional practice and whose leadership efforts have promoted interprofessional practice among colleagues, staff, students and patients.

The Leon A. Peris Memorial Award. Presented to a member of the volunteer faculty for excellence in clinical teaching and superior patient care, it was agreed that instead of a monetary gift, a contribution will be made to the Jefferson Medical College Student Loan Fund.

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. Presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to an outstanding faculty member who best embodies empathetic, sensitive, and respectful behavior in providing medical care and who demonstrates exemplary compassion in doctor/patient relations.

Research Awards

Early Career Investigator Award for Distinguished Achievement in Biomedical Research.  For outstanding research carried out by a Jefferson faculty member in basic and/or clinical/translational research within the first ten years of his/her initial faculty appointment. One award is given.

Research Career Achievement Award. For exceptional leadership in, and contributions to, a field of basic and/or clinical/translational research over the span of an academic career.  Nominees must be at the Professor rank and have been in an academic biomedical career for more than fifteen years. One award is given.

Award for Innovation in the Biomedical Sciences. For the elucidation/description of a specific discovery, technique, or instrument/device that has led to new concepts or approaches to experimentation or patient care. One award is given.

The Marjorie A. Bowman, MD ’76, Early Career Investigator Award for Primary Care.  Research will be awarded for the first time in 2012. This award recognizes a faculty member within the first ten years of his/her initial faculty appointment whose research has illuminated a fundamental clinical problem or improved the organization and delivery of primary health care.

Nomination Process for Research Awards:  Faculty may be nominated for any of these awards by their Department Chair (or Division Chief). The nomination packet should include a two page letter of nomination and the candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae including “other support”.

Eligibility:  Nominees must be a member of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  A faculty member who has received an award is not eligible to receive the same award more than once.  Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s Staff are not eligible for the award.

Cinical Awards

Outstanding Clinician Award.  Primary Care (general medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, family medicine and general pediatrics); Subspecialty Medicine (all medical fields other than above); Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties; Hospital based medicine (anesthesiology, emergency medicine, pathology, radiology)

For a physician, active in the practice of medicine and with a minimum of ten years experience in the practice of medicine following completion of training, who has truly distinguished themselves in the evidence-based, clinical practice of medicine and, where applicable, in the doctor-patient relationship.  This physician will be recognized as an exceptional physician by peers, trainees and patients.

Nomination Process for Clinical Awards:  Faculty may be nominated for any of these awards by their Department Chair (or Division Chief), Dean’s Staff including Assistant Deans of Affiliate Hospitals, Chief Academic Officers of Affiliate Hospitals, the President of the Medical Staff of TJUH and the Medical Director of JUP.  The nomination packet should include a two page letter of nomination and the candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae.  One award will be given in each category.

Eligibility:  Nominees must be a member of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  A faculty member who has received an award is not eligible to receive the same award more than once. Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s staff are ineligible for the award.

Teaching Awards

Career Educator Award.  For a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to education in academic medicine both within his/her institution and to education in his/her field over a career.  Nominees must be at the Professor rank and have been in an academic medicine career for more than fifteen years. One award will be given.

Nomination Process for Career Educator Award:  Faculty may be nominated for this award by their Department Chair (or Division Chief).  The nomination packet should include a two page letter of nomination and the candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae. One award will be given.

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education.  For faculty who 1) demonstrate superior effectiveness as teacher and devote significant time/effort to teaching over a sustained period of time, or 2) for faculty  who demonstrate major contributions to an educational course, clerkship or program of training.

Nomination Process for Teaching Awards:  Faculty may be nominated for this award by Department Chairs (and Division Chiefs); Dean’s Staff, including Affiliate Deans, Program Directors, Course Directors, Clerkship Directors and Prior Awardees. Multiple awards may be given.

Eligibility:  Nominees must be a member of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  Faculty members are eligible to be nominated again for the teaching award after a period of three years since they last received the award. Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s staff are ineligible for the award.

Mentoring Awards

Dean’s Award for Faculty Mentoring.  For faculty who demonstrate a tangible impact on the career(s) of other faculty member(s) through a sustained and effective mentoring relationship (to be differentiated from role model, advisor, counselor, etc.)

Nomination Process for Mentoring Award:  Faculty may be nominated for this award by their Department Chair (or Division Chief).  The nomination packet should include a one to two page letter of nomination, the candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae, and at least one letter of support from a former or current mentee. Multiple awards may be given.

Eligibility:  Nominees must be a member of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  Faculty members are eligible to be nominated again for the mentoring award after a period of three years since they last received the award. Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s staff are ineligible for the award.

Community Service Awards

Community Service Award. This award recognizes the work of faculty to further to goals of medicine and science within the community.  Nominations should emphasize sustained efforts that have resulted in tangible benefits to a community or communities. 

Nomination Process for Community Service Award:  Faculty may be nominated for this award by their Department Chair (or Division Chief).  The nomination packet should include a two page letter of nomination and the candidate’s updated Curriculum Vitae. One award will be given.

Eligibility:  Nominees must be a member of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  A faculty member who has received an award is not eligible to receive the same award more than once. Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s staff are ineligible for the award.

Faculty Collaborators & Team Awards

Faculty Team Achievement Award. This award recognizes the collaborative work of faculty teams leading to innovations or other achievements in clinical care, education, or research. Faculty teams should be composed of two or more faculty members.  Priority will be given to teams that span disciplinary and/or departmental boundaries.

Nomination Process for Faculty Team Achievement Award:  Faculty teams may be nominated for this award by their Department Chairs (or Division Chiefs).  The nomination packet should include a two page letter of nomination signed by all relevant Department Chairs (or Division Chiefs) and the candidates’ updated Curriculum Vitaes including “other support”.  Nominations should provide sufficient detail to describe the contribution of each member of the team to the clinical care, research or educational project and/or outcome. 

Eligibility:  Nominees must be members of the JMC Faculty for at least two years to be eligible for an award.  A faculty member who has received an award is not eligible to receive the same award more than once.  Department Chairs and Senior Dean’s Staff are not eligible for the award.
