BSN Student, Cancer Survivor, Team First Descents Member
Tess Dinan, a student in the prelicensure BSN program at Jefferson School of Nursing, is a member of Team First Descents, a program for young adult cancer survivors. She says, “I was first introduced to First Descents two years ago when I had recently won my own battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma.”
First Descents offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same.
Tess has been raising money for other cancer survivors to participate in their own program, but now it’s her turn. She will be joining a First Descents program to Colorado where she and other cancer survivors will enjoy ice climbing while learning about each other’s experiences.
“I was excited to be asked to take part in the program,” she says. “I am particularly excited because they have nurses and doctors go along on these programs. I think it would be awesome to volunteer as a nurse for First Descents in the future.”
Tess is grateful that although this opportunity came up in the middle of the semester, she was able to work out her school schedule to accommodate it.
