Applying to Jefferson School of Population Health

Welcome to Jefferson School of Population Health Web Application

We are happy that you have decided to apply to JSPH!

Applying online is fast and convenient, but in order to apply online, you must have a valid credit card.

Follow the instructions below.  If you have any questions, please call (215) 503-5305 and we’ll be glad to help you.

There are TWO steps in the application process:

  1. Completing the online application (instructions are below) and
  2. Completing the self-managed application (instructions are also below).

We suggest that you print out these instructions and refer to them as you complete the process.

1. Online Application Instructions

  • If this is your first Jefferson online application, select the “first time user account creation” option on the opening page of the application.  You can create a Login ID or have the computer generate one for you.  You may choose any six-digit number for your PIN, but please be sure to write it down.  TJU cannot access your PIN number if you forget it. Otherwise, enter your previously created Login ID and PIN.

    Login ID:   _______________    PIN#:   ________________
  • Once you begin the application, there is a 5-minute inactivity timeout.  This means that if you do not use the system for 5 minutes, you will be prompted to re-enter your Login ID and PIN to continue with the application.
  • You will be asked to choose an “Application Type” from the menu.  Select one of the following:  Applied Health Economics, Chronic Care Management, Health Policy, Healthcare Quality and Safety, Healthcare Quality and Safety Management, Public Health or Population Health Sciences (PhD).
  • All the sections of the application that apply to you will be listed with either a RED or BLUE icon.  All of the RED icons must be completed.  While we prefer that you complete the BLUE icons so that we can better serve you in the application process, these items are optional.
  • Instructions are at the top of each screen to help you complete it properly.  Please be sure to read them before starting that section.
  • When entering information, do not use all capital or lower case letters.
  • When entering a date in any section of the application, please use this format: MM/DD/YYYY, including backslashes (/).
  • When you complete all the sections, be sure to check the “Application Complete” box before you click “Submit Application.”  If you do not check the “Application Complete” box, we will not be able to download your application.
  • After the application is completed, you will be asked to provide your credit card number and expiration date to pay the application fee.  If you do not have a valid credit card, we will not be able to download your application.

2. Self-managed Application Instructions

Jefferson School of Population Health uses a self-managed application process.  Please put all required documents (transcripts, GRE and prerequisite worksheet, recommendation letters) into a single large envelope and mail them to:

Admissions Coordinator
Jefferson School of Population Health
901 Walnut Street, 10th Floor
Philadelphia, PA 19107

Here are more details about what you must send in the envelope:

A. Official Transcripts

Submit an official transcript for each undergraduate and graduate institution you have attended.

  • Ask the registrar at the college(s) you attended to send the transcript, in a signed and sealed envelope, directly to you.
  • DO NOT open the transcript – Transcripts received with broken seals will be returned to the applicant.
  • Enclose all transcripts in the self-managed application envelope.

Transcripts originating from academic institutions outside of the U.S. must be translated and a course-by-course evaluation performed by World Education Services (WES) or comparable credential evaluation service.  WES will transmit the results electronically to JSPH.  You do not need to include them in the envelope.

Please contact WES at:
World Education Services
Bowling Green Station
P.O. Box 5087

Courier Address*

New York, NY 10004

* This is a courier mail handling facility accepting DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.  Documents should not be hand delivered.

B. Letters of Recommendation

You can download recommendation forms here or your recommenders can prepare a reference on their letterhead which you will include in the single, large envelope. It is in your best interest that your recommenders know you well enough to candidly address your strengths and weaknesses as well as your ability to succeed in a rigorous academic environment.  Two letters of recommendation are required for certificate and master’s degree applicants.  Three letters of recommendation are required for PhD applicants.

  • Recommendation Forms or letters must include your name and address.  Be sure your recommender includes your name and address if he or she submits a reference on letterhead.
  • Prepare a self addressed stamped envelope for your recommender to return the letter to you.
  • After enclosing the letter, your recommender must seal the envelope you provided, sign the back, and send it back to you.
  • When you receive the letter, DO NOT open it.  Include the signed and sealed letter(s) in your self-managed application envelope.
  • Recommendation letters received with broken seals will be returned to the applicant.

C. GRE and Prerequisite Worksheet

Complete and include this worksheet in the self-managed application envelope.  Download the GRE and Prerequisite Worksheet here.

GRE
Applicants must demonstrate one of the following:

  • Competitive score on the GRE or other graduate entrance examination, such as GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, and so on.

If you are submitting GRE (GRE code = 7689) or other scores, an official, original copy of these scores should be sent by the examination organization directly to Jefferson School of Population Health. ETS will not issue GRE scores that are more than 5 years old or TOEFL scores more than 2 years old. If the scores have expired, applicants will be required to retake the test(s).
  • Do not include the scores in the self-managed application envelope!

  • Graduate degree or at least 9 credits of earned graduate coursework with a grade of “B” or higher
  • Current enrollment in a graduate clinical program (e.g., MD, MSN)
  • GPA of 3.3 or higher and specified coursework with grade of “B” or higher from a Jefferson-affiliated college or university.

Program Prerequisites
Some JSPH programs have prerequisite requirements (statistics, medical terminology, macroeconomics, and so on).  There are several ways that you can fulfill these prerequisites.  Check the appropriate box on the worksheet.

D. Essay/Personal Statement

Please use the online application to submit your essay or statement on the topic indicated in 300-500 words.

E. Work and Volunteer Experience

Applicants are encouraged to include a CV, resume, or summary of your work or volunteer experience, especially if it is related to health or healthcare.  Applicants to the MPH program should include information about any previous professional or volunteer experience in a community health setting.

F. Demonstration of English Language Proficiency

All international students and U.S. permanent residents must demonstrate English language proficiency as one of the conditions for admission to JSPH.  JSPH will accept any one of the following items to satisfy the proficiency requirement:

  • Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with an overall score of at least 87 and individual section scores as follows: Writing – 21, Speaking – 23, Reading – 21 and Listening – 22.  Do not include the scores in the self-managed application envelope. Request official scores to be sent to JSPH.
  • Baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • U.S. national or state licensure or certification in a medical, nursing or allied health field.
  • Native English speaker from one of these countries:  click here

If you are submitting TOEFL (TOEFL code = 8376) scores, an official, original copy of these scores should be sent by the examination organization directly to Jefferson School of Population Health. ETS will not issue TOEFL® scores more than 2 years old. If the scores have expired, applicants will be required to retake the test(s).
