Theodore Tsangaris, M.D. Appointed Surgical Director of the Jefferson Breast Care Center

(PHILADELPHIA) – Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has appointed Theodore N. Tsangaris, M.D. Surgical Director of the Jefferson Breast Care Center. Dr. Tsangaris specializes in nipple-sparing mastectomy. He has co-authored over 50 major peer-review research articles on breast cancer biopsy, diagnosis, and treatment and is an author of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology: Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis. He also serves as a Naval Flight Surgeon in the United States Naval Reserve and belongs to the Society of United States Navy Flight Surgeons.

Dr. Tsangaris most recently served as Associate Professor of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, as well as Director of Outpatient Breast Services at the Smilow Cancer Hospital Network. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Tsangaris was the Chief of Breast Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Johns Hopkins.

Charles J. Yeo, M.D., The Samuel D. Gross Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Jefferson said, “Ted is a consummate human being, clinician, and surgeon. Jefferson Breast Care Center Director Massimo Cristofanilli, M.D. said, “Dr. Tsangaris brings his expertise as a renowned breast surgeon, clinical investigator, and administrator. His experience will allow us to continue to present our patients with compassionate, personalized and multidisciplinary care.”

Dr. Tsangaris graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. His post-graduate training included an internship and residency in General Surgery at George Washington University Medical Center, culminating in his appointment as Chief Resident. He then completed a Seeger Fellowship in Surgical Oncology of the Breast at Baylor University Medical Center. He also completed a program in Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard School of Medicine.

Dr. Tsangaris is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is also board-certified by the American Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
