Dr. Piersol is an occupational therapist researcher with over 35 years of experience as a practitioner, educator, and researcher. As the Director of Jefferson Elder Care at Thomas Jefferson University, her work targets optimizing performance and participation in people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, frail elders, and their caregivers. Dr. Piersol and colleague, Dr. E. Adel Herge, developed a tool to measure caregiver appraisal of functional capacity that determines whether caregivers are over or underestimating the patient’s capacity, which has consequences for safety and well-being of the person with dementia. She provides training to health care professionals and consultation to agencies. Dr. Piersol presents across the country on topics related to program development, evidence-based interventions, and best practice. Her publications include a caregiver’s guide to dementia, Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Alzheimer’s Disease for other Major Neurocognitive Disorders, and a Systematic Review of caregiver interventions.
