We are pleased to announce the appointment of Beth Ann Swan, PhD, CRNP, FAAN as Dean of the Jefferson School of Nursing at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Swan is currently Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Jefferson School of Nursing, and has been serving as the Acting Dean of the Jefferson School of Nursing since July 2011.
As Dean of the Jefferson School of Nursing (JSN), Dr. Swan will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the school, with responsibility for the planning and execution of its education and research missions.
Dr. Swan has a distinguished record in research and training in the fields of evidence-based practice, ambulatory care nursing, and academic nursing practice. Dr. Swan co-authored a book, Evidence-based Nursing Care Guidelines: Medical-Surgical Interventions that received a 2008 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Award. Dr. Swan is a Past President of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) and was a member of the Steering Committee of the National Quality Forum (NQF) for Standardizing Ambulatory Care Performance Measures. She also served as an Honorary Visiting Expert, Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) for the Ministry of Health, Singapore. She has over 75 publications, including 34 peer-reviewed publications and 14 book chapters. Dr. Swan has received over $2.8 million in extramural funding including an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant to study delirium screening at the point of care in hospitalized older adults; and a grant from HRSA’s Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Nursing to develop, implement, and evaluate advanced practice educational programs to promote health access in rural Pennsylvania via online graduate education.
Recognition of Dr. Swan’s leadership role in education includes Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and selection as a 2007-2010 Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow (2007-2010). She was also the recipient of the Nightingale Award of Pennsylvania for Excellence in Nursing Research in 2009. Dr. Swan serves as a primary mentor for the RWJ Nurse Faculty Scholars Program. In addition, she is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Nursing Education and the MEDSURG Nursing Manuscript Review Panel.
Dr. Swan has served on numerous committees within JSN and TJU. Currently she is co-chair of the Distance Learning Working Group. She also served on the Support Strategic Planning Committee, the University Web Presence Steering Committee, and the Educational Mission Strategic Planning Committee.
Dr. Swan received her BSN from Holy Family College, Philadelphia in 1980. She received her MSN (1983) and PhD (1996) from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. She completed a post-doctoral research fellowship with the Campbell Collaboration at the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education. Prior to joining Jefferson, Dr. Swan was Associate Director, Office of International Programs and PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing.
